The car offered here is special in more ways than one. The end of 1968 had found Dodge needing something to fight against Ford fastbacks on the superspeedway, as the 1968 Chargerās inset grille and rear window created aerodynamic challenges at high speeds. Enter the very limited 1969 Charger 500, with a replacement flush grille and rear window design. Using deluxe Charger R/T examples, of the scheduled 500 cars modified by Creative Industries for Dodge, only 67 came with the 426 Hemi and just 27 of that group also came with the 4-speed manual transmission.
This spectacular 500 hosts its original body panels, a preserved original interior, and driveline components that include both the original matching numbers 426/425 HP Hemi V-8 engine and original matching numbers A833 4-speed manual transmission, which also mandated the Dana HD SureGrip rear axle. The powerplant was the perfect choice for this homologation release, with dual 4-barrel carburetors, NASCAR-derived internals and high-flow exhaust. The R/T designation meant both sport equipment and heavy-duty suspension parts, and this car has power steering and power brakes.
The incredibly attractive exterior has undergone a single repaint in its correct T5 Dark Bronze Metallic, and is complemented by a white tail stripe and a gorgeous saddle interior. The interior features headrest-equipped bucket seats, a center console with woodgrain applique and Hurst shifter, Solid State pushbutton radio and performance dash with a 150 MPH speedometer and optional Tic-Toc-Tac. Exterior details include the script Charger emblems, exclusive Charger 500 model insignia and Hemi door emblems, while color-matched steel wheels with small-diameter hubcaps and white stripe tires finish the look. The Charger 500 was short-lived, superseded by the even more radical Charger Daytona by mid-1969. This aero-special recalls this era perfectly, with a level of beauty few others can match. With the Hemi/4-speed combination and excellent originality, this Charger 500 is a superspeedway spectacular.
