In many ways, form has followed function when it comes to automotive competition, but few such studies have ever equaled the legendary 1970 Plymouth Superbird. For a brief period in the 1960s, manufacturers created vehicles whose real purpose was in the professional racing world, releasing cars like this one to the public primarily to make those changes legal. In late 1969, this car and approximately 1,920 others were built at Plymouthās Lynch Road plant. Of that group, 408 of them were optioned like this one, with the V-code 440 6BBL engine mated with the TorqueFlite transmission.
In this instance, both that 390 HP 6-BBL V-8 engine and A727 automatic are matching numbers to this car. Set into a highly detailed engine compartment with correct hoses, clamps, markings, and round hole air filter, this 3x2 Holley carburetor layout is an excellent choice for this model. It is completed by the A33 performance axle package including the Sure Grip-equipped 8.75 rear end with 3.55 gearing.
The Road Runner-based body is covered in EW1 Alpine White paint fitted with the special Superbird pieces, such as the streamlined nosecone, special back window mandating the black vinyl top, and towering deck wing. Where this car truly stands apart is inside, where it is optioned with highly desirable bucket seats, C16 console with shift handle, factory radio delete, and the special Road Runner icon steering wheel center connected to the ābeep-beepā horn underhood. Details outside include functional hood pins, front spoiler, fender air scoops, huge Plymouth lettering, Road Runner cartoon decals, chrome exhaust extensions, and premium Rallye wheels with Goodyear Polyglas GT F60-15 tires.
In addition to a factory broadcast sheet, this sale will include the signed 50th Anniversary Winged Warriors limited edition print featuring the white Superbird, and an affixed Winged Warriors 50th Anniversary participant window sticker. Racing rules changed quickly, and Superbirds were rendered uncompetitive, leaving examples like this car as a visible reminder of Detroitās race-winning determination. Coupled with its provenance and desirable options, this special aero Plymouth remains among the most desirable of the eraās evolutionary vehicle releases.
