This factory J-code Hemi Road Runner hardtop was one of just 234 Hemi 4-speed hardtops built during the Road Runnerās second model year. This Plymouth was built by noted Mopar and Hemi expert Steve Atwell using dated and period-correct parts, and an original fender tag breakdown gives the carās factory options.
A āJā in the VIN meant an E74 426 Hemi engine with dual inline 4-barrel carburetors and a āCoyote Dusterā oval air cleaner that fit up into the new-for-1969 N96 Air Grabber hood, as well as J25 three-speed wipers mandated by that change. Behind this, the A34 Super Track Pak meant a D21 A833 heavy duty 4-speed transmission and the Dana 60 differential with a 4.10 ratio and SureGrip. This car has both power brakes and power steering as well.
Dressed in black, this mean machine features limited factory bright trim and red Air Grabber hood inserts. The interior features a high grade vinyl bench seat with adjustable headrests, the factory Hurst shifter with woodgrain ball knob, N85 in-dash tachometer and a thumbwheel-design Chrysler radio. There is also a remote driverās side mirror, fender-mounted turn signal indicators, and the special Road Runner steering wheel center connected to the āBeep-Beep!ā horn under the hood.
Outside, this car hosts the small but colorful door-based Warner Bros bird icons, M21 drip rail moldings, HEMI tags on the hood openings and chrome exhaust tips. Though day-two mags were often the choice, this Road Runner rides on body-color steel wheels with small-diameter hubcaps and large blackwall radial tires. The Road Runner was a proud moment for the company in terms of both sales and visibility.
