The Plymouth Road Runner was the Motor Trend Car of the Year for 1969

If there was ever a car that inspired the word ā€œbrutal,ā€ the A12 Plymouth Road Runner was it. No factory hubcaps, the biggest engine offered by Chrysler and raw street notoriety set these vehicles apart from everything else on the market—save for the Dodge Six Pack Super Bee. There were just 422 A12-optioned hardtop Road Runners equipped with the A833 4-speed manual transmission, as this was a limited release done in the spring of 1969, long after the car had already been named Motor Trend magazine’s ā€œCar of the Year.ā€

What Chrysler did was reengineer a special 440 engine exclusive to A12-equipped cars, noted by an ā€œMā€ in the VIN, equipped with three 2-barrel Holley carburetors plus camshaft and reciprocating parts changes. A correct date-coded block is installed here. The A34 Super Track Pak was also included, meaning every A12 order received the Dana 60 Sure Grip differential, and this car has 4.10 final gearing coupled to police-package shocks, heavy duty springs, big 11-inch drum brakes and G60-series tires. Chrysler engineers were proud of its handling prowess—but most buyers considered blinding acceleration the highlight.

The car’s white exterior paint is contrasted by the special scooped fiberglass hood that came with every A12 order, held by four hood pins instead of hinges. Inside, this car has a unique factory F8 Green vinyl interior that features front bucket seats, console delete, an updated Pistol Grip shifter, thumbwheel radio, in-dash tachometer and sport steering wheel with a center-cap Road Runner icon. Outside are Road Runner decals, chrome exhaust exits, the A12-specific 15-inch black steel wheels with chrome lug nuts and upscale redline tires. The factory spare rim and jack are in the trunk, and the factory fender tag verifies its as-built condition. Very fast and relatively inexpensive when new, many of these cars are now gone today. This bucket seat hardtop A12 Road Runner may be refined, but it’s still as brutal as it was on day one.
