Technology advanced for America’s drag racing competitors in 1963, and the Dodge here is a unique and rare example of that fact. In the summer of 1963, Chrysler authorized the release of special aluminum body panels as part of the 426 Max Wedge’s ongoing development. This Dodge was the third of only nine such cars to be assembly line-built using the 330-series body. Prior to this, 330-series cars had been built and delivered with steel. Another change for 1963 was the adoption of the 7-liter displacement limit by global sanctioning bodies, so Chrysler released the first of the 426-CID packages.

This 330 Lightweight was factory ordered with the 426 Max Wedge V-8 and Aluminum Package, entailing a crossram-equipped 426/425 HP Ramcharger V-8 wedge engine with dual offset Carter 4-barrel carburetors, large cast exhaust manifolds, and an exhaust system with factory caps that could be opened at the racetrack (or gas station). This was backed by the A727 TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission and 3.91 rear axle, with manual steering and 4-wheel drum brakes. The new Aluminum Package consisted of aluminum front fenders, the hood with air scoop, and a front bumper dust shield.

With an odometer reading of 2,098 miles at the time of writing, this car has received an extensive restoration to like-original specifications by Muscle Car Restorations in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. The car sports a red exterior and matching red cloth and vinyl interior with radio and heater delete. There are also lightened front bumper and bumper supports, and a trunk-mounted battery over the right rear tire for increased traction. Final touches to the outside would be the color-matched wheels with small-diameter bright hubcaps, wearing narrow Goodyear blackwall tires. Built at the Hamtramck plant near Detroit and first delivered to Iverson Motorcar Co. in Santa Maria, California, this Mopar hails from a legendary era, and its quality is stunning throughout. This factory ā€œMaxieā€ will hold its own on both the show field and in any muscle car collection.
