Dodgeās Challenger T/A was born not so much to create a visual street model but to legalize parts for the SCCAās Trans-Am series. That fact does not conflict with the truth that these were tremendous road machines. Beyond being one of an estimated 26 Challenger T/As produced in TX9 Black, this car is also a true Mr. Norm's Challenger T/A, sold new at the well-recalled Grand Spaulding Dodge franchise in Chicago, Illinois.
The car is documented by a broadcast sheet and the original fender tag. Interestingly, only 989 T/As were built on the assembly line for installation of the A833 4-speed manual transmissionāa lower-than-expected number considering the overall production total of 2,399 units and the carās intended purpose. Built for only one year to homologate Dodge into the 1970 SCCA Trans-Am season, the cars were actually a complete package of body, suspension and engine changes. Under the hood is a unique 340/290 HP Six Pack V-8 engine featuring three 2-barrel Holley carburetors on an Edelbrock aluminum intake, adjustable rocker arms and an exclusive low-restriction dual exhaust system ending with chrome "megaphone" tips ahead of the rear wheel openings. This is backed by the optional A833 4-speed manual transmission, a Sure Grip 8 3/4-inch differential, a race-developed suspension and steering package, and power brakes.
The T/A body adaptations do not stand out on this particular car since they match the body color. Every car received a matte black fiberglass hood with a scoop, a functional ducktail-design deck spoiler and black T/A-lettered stripes. Inside are front bucket seats, the center console with a Hurst Pistol Grip shifter, an aftermarket tach, and wood-grain touches. The rear window louvers are here, as are Rallye wheels, which host E60x15 front and G60x15 rear tires. Noting times of 0-60 MPH in approximately 5.9 seconds and a top speed of approximately 146 MPH, the Challenger T/A was no slouch in the acceleration department, but corners were its real game. Mr. Normās origins and a triple-black theme make this example shine.
