Car Overview
This 1964 Plymouth Barracuda is a one-off design study that was modified when new by Chrysler stylists, who transformed it into a targa-style āLandauā version with a removable fabric roof panel. Finished in Gold over gold-colored vinyl upholstery, the car is powered by a 273ci V8 linked with a push-button three-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes steel 13ā³ wheels, styled wheel covers, power brakes, and an AM radio. The selling dealer acquired the vehicle in mid-2026. This Barracuda prototype is now offered in Michigan at no reserve with a soft roof panel and a clean Tennessee title.
Plymouth launched the Valiant-based Barracuda fastback on April 1, 1964, and the carmaker built 23,443 examples for the abbreviated 1964 model year. The model featured a distinctive curved rear window, deck lid, and roofline as well as a Barracuda-only split grille. This example was finished from the factory in Gold (A) and was repainted at some point under prior ownership, according to the seller. Exterior details include front vent windows, bright trim, V8 fender badges, a Valiant logo at the leading edge of the deck lid, reverse lights, and wraparound chrome bumpers.
This car was modified circa 1964 by the Chrysler design team, which removed the main roof section to create a targa-style setup. The rear window and the arched sheetmetal panel ahead of the now-open roof area are retained, as is the windshield and its header. The seller notes chipped paint on the body as well as pitting on the emblems, rear-window trim, and taillight bezels.
Steel 13ā³ wheels feature styled covers and are mounted with National Horizon polyester whitewall tires. Braking is provided by power-assisted drums at each corner; the brake master cylinder is said to have been recently replaced.
The cabin houses front bucket seats and a fold-down rear bench upholstered in gold vinyl. Interior appointments include a Valiant Transaudio AM radio, a heater, front lap belts, color-coordinated carpeting, and bright doorsill plates. The driver seat is worn.
The three-spoke steering wheel fronts a 110-mph speedometer and secondary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 52k miles, approximately 15 of which were added by the selling dealer. The gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature are inoperative. Push-button transmission controls are positioned to the left of the steering wheel.
The 273ci V8 was factory rated to produce 180 horsepower and is fed by a Carter two-barrel carburetor.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission.
The accompanying soft roof panel is damaged and does not fit properly on the Plymouth.
