Car Overview

This 1970 Plymouth Superbird was purchased in 1982 by NASCAR Hall of Fame driver and team owner Richard Petty, who displayed the car at the Petty Museum in Level Cross, North Carolina, in the 1990s. Petty sold the vehicle in 2013 to the current owner, who commissioned Petty’s Garage of Randleman, North Carolina, to repaint the car and perform other refurbishment work. The Superbird is one of 1,920 examples produced for a single model year, and it is powered by a 440ci Super Commando V8 linked with a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. Finished in Alpine White with “Plymouth From Petty” graphics and a black vinyl roof over black vinyl upholstery, the vehicle features includes a nose cone, flip-up headlamps, a rear wing, Rallye 15″ wheels, power steering, power-assisted front disc brakes, custom-embroidered seats, woodgrain interior trim, a center console, and an AM radio. This Superbird is now offered in Indiana by the selling dealer—a BaT Local Partner—on dealer consignment with a broadcast sheet, photocopies of superseded titles from Petty’s ownership, refurbishment records, Richard Petty memorabilia, and a Maryland title in the owner’s name.

Based on Plymouth’s mid-size Road Runner model, the 1970-only Superbird was designed for NASCAR competition, which required Chrysler to produce approximately 2,000 examples for homologation. This car was finished from the factory in Alpine White (EW1). Its aerodynamic nose cone has satin-black graphics and flip-up headlamps, and other exterior features include fender vents, hood pins, a black vinyl roof, a remote-adjustable driver-side mirror, simulated side scoops, a 24″-tall stabilizer wing, “Road Runner” cartoon graphics, and dual exhaust outlets that exit below the chrome rear bumper. Black “Plymouth From Petty” script adorns the quarter panels.

The car was stripped and repainted in Alpine White during the aforementioned refurbishment conducted by Petty’s Garage, and the black vinyl roof covering was replaced.

Rallye 15″ road wheels are mounted with 235/70 BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. The car is equipped with power steering, and braking is provided by power-assisted front discs and rear drums.

The front bucket seats and the rear bench are upholstered in black vinyl with silver-colored piping and are complemented by a color-coordinated dashboard, door panels, and carpeting. Appointments include woodgrain trim, a center console, a Chrysler Solid State AM radio, a heater, floor mats, front and rear lap belts, and front shoulder belts.

Silhouettes of Richard Petty were embroidered into the front headrests during the refurbishment.

A three-spoke steering wheel with a chrome horn ring and a Road Runner “Beep! Beep!” center cap fronts a 150-mph speedometer and gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and amperage. The five-digit odometer shows 28k miles, approximately 2,500 of which were added under current ownership.

The 440ci Super Commando V8 was factory equipped with a four-barrel carburetor and was rated at 375 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque when new.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission.
