With a redesign created purely for function, this 1969 Charger Daytona could perhaps have been less deluxe, but the brand’s managers understood that class and power would be a huge part of marketing the required street versions of this notorious racing-focused release. As a result, the performance Charger R/T platform was selected as the basis for these builds, meaning the 440 Magnum V-8 big block was standard equipment on the Engineering Code A11 Dodge Daytona package, with the 426 Hemi the only other engine option.

Converted at subcontractor Creative Industries in mid-1969, and sold new at Trail Dodge in Miami, Florida, this example now features a fresh OEM-level restoration and retains both its matching-numbers 440/375 HP powerplant and A727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission. The engine uses a 4-barrel carburetor, dual exhaust and has been set up for electronic ignition. Furthermore, this car is factory optioned with the A36 Performance Axle Package, which includes the 3.55 SureGrip 8.75 differential, maximum cooling accessories and heavy-duty suspension. It also came with both power steering and power brakes.

Of course, most notable of the car’s exterior appointments are the special aerodynamic parts required to legalize the body changes for NASCAR competition. These included the iconic nose cone and rear wing, functional hood hold-down pins, front fender-mounted air extractors and the special rear glass. This car is painted R4 Red with a white wing and matching white interior, which includes front bucket seats with headrests, the center console with wood-grain applique and shifter, a three-spoke sport steering wheel, Solid State thumbwheel AM radio and Charger R/T A01 Light Group.

Outside, this Mopar classic features the script Charger emblems, flip-open gas filler, chrome exhaust tips and the word DAYTONA in the wing’s color panel. It also features 14-inch steel wheels that wear deluxe-design five-spoke simulated mag wheel covers. The Charger Daytona would indeed go on to help win the 1970 NASCAR series crown thanks to Bobby Isaac and Harry Hyde, while street-version Daytonas like the car offered here would be considered the most impressive release of the Dodge Charger’s storied era.
