Legendary racer Tony “Smoke” Stewart is making a highly anticipated return to NASCAR competition in 2026, teaming up with Ram Trucks and Kaulig Racing for the season-opening NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series race at Daytona International Speedway.
Stewart, a three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and motorsports icon, last competed in a NASCAR national series race in 2016 before shifting his focus to NHRA drag racing with Dodge. Now, more than a decade later, he’s set to climb back behind the wheel—this time in a Ram truck as part of Ram’s new Free Agent Program with Kaulig Racing.
A Legendary Return
Stewart’s return to NASCAR marks his first Truck Series start since 2005 and his first NASCAR start overall in ten years. Known for his fierce competitive spirit and adaptability across racing disciplines, Stewart brings a wealth of experience to the event. “I’ve raced just about everything with four wheels at Daytona, but never a truck,” Stewart said. “So when a seat in the new Ram was offered up for their first race back in NASCAR, I didn’t hesitate.”
Ram’s Free Agent Program
The Free Agent Program is a new initiative designed to put a mix of seasoned veterans and rising stars in the driver’s seat for the No. 25 Ram truck throughout the 2026 Truck Series season. Stewart has the honor of being the first driver tapped for the program, generating excitement for fans and spotlighting Ram’s return to NASCAR competition.
Ram’s involvement in NASCAR comes through a partnership with Kaulig Racing, which will field five Ram 1500 trucks in the upcoming Truck Series season. Alongside Stewart, drivers Brenden “Butterbean” Queen, Daniel Dye, and Justin Haley are set for full-time seats, with additional competition for a final berth coming through the “Race for the Seat” initiative later in the year.
Why This Matters
Ram’s collaboration with Kaulig Racing represents a major effort to re-establish the brand in NASCAR’s top ranks. Team owner Matt Kaulig expressed enthusiasm about Stewart’s participation, calling it “the kind of thing you dream about” and underscoring the energy and attention it brings to the sport.
Stewart himself is no stranger to Daytona success, having collected numerous victories across NASCAR series at the famed track. His return not only bridges generations of racing fans but also spotlights Ram’s bold entry into a new era of NASCAR competition.
Fans can expect exclusive behind-the-scenes content and exciting race-day experiences as Stewart takes on this historic role at Daytona in February.
