The 1968 Dodge Charger represented an incredible moment in automotive styling. While the lead stylist Bill Brownlie was traveling in Europe, young designer Richard Sias did the initial work for this model. Brownlie reportedly disliked it, but Dodge boss Bob McCurry overrode his objections, resulting in the shape offered here. One of only 264 Hemi Charger R/Ts produced in 1968 with the automatic transmission, this example is still hosting its original matching-numbers 426 CI engine and A727 TorqueFlite transmission; and of the mere seven A-code silver Hemi Chargers produced in 1968, this is the only known silver example with a black vinyl top and rear stripe delete.

This car has benefited from a rotisserie restoration using original and NOS parts, retaining its factory trunk, floorboards, five original wheels and the original jack assembly. The VIN and fender tag are intact, and provenance further includes the original owner’s manual specific to 1968 Hemi Chargers, as well as Chrysler Registry documentation.

The Hemi needs little introduction, and this numbers-matching example has the right stuff, with dual 4-barrel Carter carburetors beneath the chrome air cleaner, competition-derived hemispherical cylinder heads and extreme-duty internal parts. Backed by the 3-speed Hemi TorqueFlite and an 8.75 SureGrip differential, it was born to run.

Inside is “R/T deluxe,” starting with the front bucket seats and center console, a factory dash layout with optional Tic-Toc-Tach, a 150 MPH speedometer and Dodge Solid State AM radio with optional rear speaker. The exterior is unmatched thanks to the deeply inset grille and flying buttress rear window. Other touches would be the R/T emblems, script Charger insignia, flip-open gas filler, chrome exhaust extensions and turbine-themed tail lamps.

Exacting in many ways, this is a standout example of an incredible model. Mr. Sias left Chrysler soon after for a career styling machines for airline builder Boeing, leaving this as his sole design for Detroit. This silver Hemi Charger is likewise unmatched in its excellence.
