There is a special place for black when it comes to Chargers—especially from 1968—thanks to chase scenes from the movies “Bullitt” and “Cannonball.” Those bad guys seemed to gravitate toward the model, and this example is bad to the bone thanks to its custom restoration into a Hemi superstar.

The 1968 model year saw the Charger mature from its roots as basically a fastback Coronet into a stand-alone design still heralded for its stylish beauty. The biggest engine offered back then was the wedge-design 440 Magnum, but here, a fuel-injected 472 CI Hemi V-8 engine is now installed.

A direct result of Mopar’s 21st century resurgence, the big-displacement crate-offered engines have led to some incredible projects like this car, which emerge to take their place among the highlights of modified performance. Equipped with a serpentine belt drive and modern air conditioning, this Charger is much improved over circa-1968 technology. The engine is backed by an automatic transmission and the set of 4-wheel disc brakes that have been added, giving this beast upgraded stopping power.

The car wears black with a matching black vinyl roof and does not feature the rear stripe. Inside, a new red interior has been installed, using Legendary bolstered seats and a set of Dakota Digital RTX gauges in the dash. The center console hosts the chrome shifter handle, and right above that rests a controller screen for EFI management. Open the decklid to reveal a custom finished trunk.

The roof and wheel wells are edged in chrome, as are the special 1968 turbine side markers and tail lamps, and the ribbed inset grille with a deep argent surround and covered headlights. Chrome exhaust tips, badging and the fender-topping flip-open gas cap also all offer a bit of gleam to go with that rich, black paint. In lieu of shiny rims, a set of 17-inch factory-style wheels were selected, fitted with small-diameter hubcaps and supporting Nitto radial tires.
