Stellantis Revives Diesel Cars in Europe as Electric Vehicle Momentum Wanes

Stellantis, the global automaker behind brands such as Peugeot, Opel and Alfa Romeo, is quietly reintroducing diesel-powered vehicles across Europe after pulling back from an earlier push toward electric vehicles. The decision reflects shifting market dynamics as demand for battery electric vehicles falls short of expectations and diesel remains attractive to certain buyers.

In late 2025, Stellantis began reactivating diesel versions of at least seven models on dealer sites and in its line-ups. These include popular passenger cars like the Peugeot 308 hatchback and premium DS 4, as well as vans such as the Opel Combo and Citroƫn Berlingo. Vans and SUVs that already offered diesel variants, like the DS7 and Alfa Romeo Stelvio, will continue to be available with diesel powertrains.

The company told Reuters it has chosen to keep diesel engines in its portfolio and, in some cases, expand powertrain options based on customer demand. This shift comes as electric car sales have not met the automaker’s prior forecasts and as European regulators ease emissions deadlines, allowing internal combustion engines to remain viable for longer.

Diesel vehicles have lost ground in Europe since their peak popularity more than a decade ago. In 2015 they made up more than half of new car sales, but by 2025 their share had declined sharply to under ten percent. At the same time electric vehicle registrations have grown, but not fast enough to fully displace conventional combustion engines in the short run.

Analysts say the return of diesel gives Stellantis a competitive edge in segments where Chinese electric rivals have limited presence and where diesel retains cost and practical advantages, especially in long-distance driving and commercial use. With wider choices on offer, Stellantis aims to better align its products with what customers are actually buying rather than sticking strictly to previous electrification targets.

Overall, this represents a marked strategic pivot for Stellantis as it balances its electrification ambitions with the realities of consumer preferences and market pressures across Europe.
