Stellantis Reintroduces Diesel Cars Across Europe as EV Sales Slow

Stellantis has quietly begun bringing back diesel-powered versions of several cars and vans across Europe after earlier plans to phase them out. The automaker is offering diesel options again on at least seven models, including compact cars and passenger transporters, in response to shifting customer demand and slower than expected electric vehicle sales.

The move reflects a broader strategic shift at the company. Stellantis brands such as Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Opel now list diesel powertrains once again for vehicles like the Peugeot 308 and DS 4 hatchback, plus vans such as the Opel Combo and Citroën Berlingo. Diesel engines remain popular in parts of Europe, especially for buyers who need long driving range without frequent refuelling or who use their vans for heavy work.

Industry analysts say the return of diesel options comes at a time when electric vehicle sales have not grown as quickly as some had hoped and when governments in the region are adjusting emissions targets that allow combustion engines to stay viable for longer. Stellantis told Reuters that it plans to keep diesel engines in its portfolio and in some cases expand the options available to customers who still want them.

This diesel revival is seen as a way for Stellantis to maintain market relevance with buyers who are not ready to switch to full electric vehicles. Diesel remains a cost effective choice for many drivers in Europe. With diesel engines reappearing on more Stellantis models, the company is signaling that it will continue offering a broad range of powertrain choices to meet diverse customer needs in a changing automotive landscape.
