Stellantis Faces Lawsuit Over Emissions Claims for Jeep Plug-In Hybrids
Stellantis and Chrysler are at the center of a new lawsuit after an owner of a 2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe filed a complaint in federal court accusing the automaker of misleading buyers about the vehicleās emissions performance. The lawsuit centers on claims that the plug-in hybrid electric vehicles do not deliver the environmental benefits that customers were led to expect when they made their purchase.
The owner alleges that Stellantis promoted the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe as having strong emissions advantages and greater fuel savings, but that real-world driving results did not match what was advertised. The complaint says that owners were drawn to the vehicles because they believed they would be cleaner and cheaper to operate. Instead, the lawsuit asserts that the plug-ins often underperformed and did not live up to the expectations set by marketing materials.
The legal action contends that Stellantisā marketing language was deceptive and violated consumer protection laws. It points to statements made in advertising and product literature that emphasized lower emissions and reduced environmental impact. According to the filing, these claims influenced the buyerās decision to pay a premium price for a vehicle he believed offered both eco-friendly performance and savings at the pump.
Stellantis has not yet publicly responded to the complaint. At this stage, the lawsuit remains in its early phases, with attorneys for the plaintiff seeking to have the case certified as a class action so that other owners with similar complaints can join. If that happens, the case could involve many more Jeep PHEV owners and lead to broader legal and reputational implications for the automaker.
Cases like this highlight the challenges automakers face as they promote electrified vehicles in a market that is increasingly sensitive to fuel economy and emissions. Whether the allegations have merit will be determined in court, but for now the lawsuit adds to the growing number of legal challenges tied to electric and hybrid vehicle claims across the auto industry.
