Multiple Vehicles Stolen From Storage Lot Near Detroit Assembly Complex — Police Investigate
In the early hours of Wednesday morning, a storage lot near the Detroit Assembly Complex – Jefferson — a Stellantis manufacturing hub — was breached, and several vehicles were stolen, authorities confirmed. The break-in has renewed concerns about auto theft in the region, especially at unsecured third-party storage sites where newly built cars and trucks are held before delivery to dealers.
Break-In in the Early Morning Hours
Detroit Police say the incident occurred around 3 a.m. Wednesday near Mack Avenue and Conner Street on the city’s east side. Investigators believe suspects cut through the perimeter fence of the vehicle holding yard — which is managed by a third-party logistics company — and drove multiple vehicles out of the lot before fleeing.
Footage from the scene shows parts of fencing torn apart, indicating forced entry. Police have not yet released suspect descriptions or a total value for the vehicles stolen, but the haul reportedly included several trucks and sport-utility vehicles that had been awaiting shipment to dealerships.
Not the First Time This Lot Has Been Targeted
This isn’t the first time criminals have targeted the same storage location. Similar thefts have occurred in the past, raising long-term concerns about the security of off-site vehicle holding lots in Detroit’s automotive corridor. In one recent incident, thieves dismantled part of the fence and drove new vehicles out of the yard, prompting questions from community members about stronger security measures.
Residents living near the area expressed frustration about repeated thefts. “They should have extra security the way things are around here,” one nearby resident told CBS Detroit, reflecting local unease about crime in the neighborhood.
Police and Company Responses
The Detroit Police Department says its investigation is ongoing, and detectives are seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area that night. As of now, no arrests have been announced. Stellantis, which oversees operations at the assembly complex but does not directly manage the third-party storage lot, said it is cooperating with law enforcement and is not providing additional details while the case remains open.
Auto theft continues to be a challenge in the Detroit metro area, with law enforcement agencies working with communities and industry partners to crack down on organized thefts and secure high-value assets.
