Jeep Recon Could Feature a Hidden Winch Under the Hood

The upcoming Jeep Recon is already shaping up to be one of the most interesting electric off road vehicles on the horizon. Now a newly discovered patent suggests the rugged SUV could include a feature that would set it apart from just about every other production Jeep ever built. According to the patent filing, the Recon may come with a winch hidden under the hood instead of mounted on the front bumper.

If the design makes it into production, it would be a unique approach to recovery equipment and could give Jeep enthusiasts something completely new when it comes to factory off road capability.

A Different Approach to a Classic Off Road Tool

For decades, winches have been a staple piece of gear for serious off road vehicles. They are typically mounted on the front bumper and used to pull a vehicle out of mud, rocks, snow, or other difficult terrain.

While effective, traditional winch setups come with a few drawbacks. Because they sit exposed on the front of the vehicle, they are constantly subjected to water, dirt, road salt, and debris. Over time, that exposure can lead to wear and corrosion.

The patent filed by Stellantis engineers takes a different approach. Instead of mounting the winch on the bumper, the design places the entire system inside the vehicle’s front compartment, tucked safely under the hood. The cable would exit through a small opening in the front fascia, allowing it to function normally while the mechanical parts remain protected.

Why an Electric SUV Makes This Possible

One of the reasons this design could work so well on the Jeep Recon comes down to how electric vehicles are packaged.

Traditional gasoline powered SUVs have engines, intake systems, and other components filling up most of the space under the hood. Electric vehicles are different. Their drive motors and components are mounted lower in the chassis, which often leaves extra room in the front compartment. Many EVs use that space as a storage area commonly called a frunk.

According to the patent, the winch could be installed in this front compartment area while still leaving room for storage or other components depending on the configuration.

Moving the winch under the hood could bring several advantages.

Production is expected to begin in Mexico in 2026, with the Recon positioned as a fully electric SUV aimed directly at off road enthusiasts who still want the freedom and capability Jeep is known for.

It is important to note that a patent does not guarantee the feature will appear on the final production vehicle. Automakers often file patents for ideas that never reach the market.
