One of the most iconic American muscle cars ever built — the 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T with a 426 Hemi — made waves at the Bring a Trailer auction on October 7, 2022, when it hammered down for $502,000 after spirited bidding.

The example that sold was far from an ordinary Challenger. Finished in striking Hemi Orange with a contrasting black vinyl roof and interior, this particular R/T had remarkable history and presentation. Originally sold through Davenport Dodge in Iowa, it spent much of its early life with its first owner before being tucked into storage for decades.

What Makes This Challenger Special

Under the hood sat the legendary 426 Hemi V8, factory rated at 425 horsepower, paired with a four-speed manual transmission — the combination that made this car a superstar in the early ’70s. The Hemi’s reputation for brute power and racing dominance helped define the Challenger’s place in muscle car lore, and examples with low miles and a strong history command strong attention from collectors.

This particular car also featured desirable factory options such as the Super Track Pack with heavier duty suspension and a Dana 60 rear end, power-assisted front disc brakes, hood hold-down pins, and dual four-barrel carburetors feeding the big Hemi engine. It was also offered with its original factory build sheet and dealer order copy, a detail that often boosts confidence for buyers and keeps serious bidders active.

Collector Muscle Car Values Continue to Climb

The $502,000 sale price underscores just how heated the market has become for original or well-preserved muscle cars, especially those with factory big-block powerplants like the Hemi. While not every 1970 Challenger will fetch seven figures, Hemi-equipped examples in desirable condition have repeatedly shown they can exceed half a million dollars when the right buyer comes along.

With classic car auctions keeping pace and interest in Mopar heritage running high, headline sales like this one reflect both the nostalgia and investment appeal wrapped up in America’s late-’60s performance icons.
