Opel Combo Electric Becomes the 17 Millionth Vehicle Produced at Stellantis Vigo
A major milestone has been reached at the Stellantis manufacturing plant in Vigo, Spain. The facility recently celebrated the production of its 17 millionth vehicle, and the honor went to the all electric Opel Combo Electric. Opel Combo Electric
The historic vehicle rolled off the production line in a distinctive Kiama Blue color and will eventually be delivered to a customer in Slovakia. The moment marked another important chapter for the Vigo plant, which has been a key part of the European automotive industry since it first opened its doors in 1958.
To celebrate the achievement, Stellantis employees gathered for a commemorative photo with the milestone vehicle. Workers from across the facility, along with management and representatives from the workers council, took part in the celebration recognizing decades of production and teamwork.
A Long History of Vehicle Production
The Vigo facility has been operating for more than six decades and has played a major role in building vehicles for global markets. Over its 68 year history, the plant has produced 38 different models across several Stellantis brands.
Production at the factory originally began in 1958 with the Citroƫn AZU, a small utility vehicle derived from the famous 2CV. Over the years, the plant expanded its lineup to include several iconic light commercial vehicles and passenger models.
Today the Vigo facility is best known for its expertise in producing compact vans and light commercial vehicles. More than 8.5 million vehicles in this category have been built there, including models that serve businesses and families around the world.
The Opel Combo and Its Role at Vigo
The latest generation of the Opel Combo has been produced in Vigo since July 2018. Since then, the plant has manufactured around 370,000 units of the model, with roughly 92 percent of those vehicles exported to international markets.
Production remains strong, with about 150 units of the Combo being built each day. The model shares its production line with several related vehicles from other Stellantis brands, demonstrating the flexibility of the factoryās manufacturing system.
Alongside the Combo, the Vigo plant also produces other popular compact vans including the Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Rifter, Peugeot Partner, and Fiat Doblò.
Electric Power for the Milestone Vehicle
The milestone model was the electric version of the Combo, which began production at the plant in 2021. The vehicle is powered by a 100 kW electric motor that produces around 136 horsepower and is paired with a 50 kWh battery pack.
This setup allows the vehicle to travel up to 334 kilometers on the WLTP cycle while reaching a top speed of about 132 km per hour. The electric version currently represents about six percent of total Combo production at the plant.
One of the key advantages of the Vigo factory is its ability to build electric and internal combustion versions of the vehicle on the same production line. This flexibility allows Stellantis to adjust production depending on market demand.
A Pioneer in Electric Vehicle Production
The Vigo facility has also been an early participant in electric vehicle manufacturing. Over the years it has produced 12 different electric models. One of the earliest examples was an electric version of the Citroƫn C15 built in 1995.
This long experience with electrification has helped the plant adapt as the automotive industry shifts toward cleaner technologies and electric mobility.
A Symbol of the Plantās Legacy
The 17 millionth vehicle represents more than just a production number. It highlights the long history of the Vigo factory and the thousands of workers who have contributed to its success.
From small utility vans in the 1950s to modern electric commercial vehicles today, the facility has evolved alongside the automotive industry. With electric vehicles like the Opel Combo Electric now rolling off its assembly lines, the Stellantis Vigo plant continues to play a major role in the companyās future mobility strategy.
The milestone serves as a reminder of how far the plant has come and how it continues to adapt as the industry moves toward a more electrified future.
